Ten Things to do Before Leaving your Apartment for Christmas Break

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Finals are over, and it’s time to go home. As tempting as it is to hightail- it out of Clifton the second your last final has concluded, it’s important to triple- check this list to keep your apartment safe while you’re away.

  1. Turn the heat down to 55 degrees- DO NOT turn it completely off. I know this seems like a waste of money, but it will keep the pipes from freezing then bursting. It will also be easier to warm back up upon your return.
  2. Leave sink cabinets and vents open- This will help keep the pipes warm as well.
  3. Clean out the fridge.
  4. Unplug everything- This keeps your energy bill to a minimum and helps prevent electrical fires.
  5. Set reminders to pay bills- It’s easy to forget about paying bills when you’re out of your groove (and who is thinking about bills on New Year’s Day?), so set yourself a reminder on your phone or write a note to pay your rent and other bills that may be due while you’re away to refrain from racking up late fees.
  6. Lower blinds and close curtains- This will help keep the heat in and deter people from looking through windows.
  7. Secure all windows and doors- Locking your doors and windows limits the chances of unwanted visitors shopping in your apartment while you’re away.
  8. Remove garbage.
  9. Take valuables with you.
  10. If possible, have a friend periodically check on your apartment. Having someone trustworthy stop by once a week or so will give you peace of mind while you’re away.

Review this list before leaving your apartment, but most importantly- leave your heat on and lock your doors.

Have a relaxing holiday break! We will see you in January.
